yeah the best way to explain it would be to contrast the beats and basslines on beaucoup fish with 100 days off, the first post-emerson album
still great melodies but starting to sound more like a pop band than a techno outfit

was a huge fan through the whole emerson era... this is just a guess but i feel like he was the guy who gave them a much more hard, club sound, slicker sort of underground edge. after he left/quit/was kicked out its like rick just went back to making the same sort of shit he did before, musically solid, great melodies, but just without nearly the same bite that the stuff had with darren.
